Young Living uses three extraction processes to collect oils from plants. Each extraction process has a specific purpose, however, steam-distilled process is used to produced the majority of essential oils.
First, to extract the pure oils from plants, Young Living uses the oldest and traditional process called steamed-distilled. Plants are distilled using a propriety low-pressure and low temperature process (steam produced by heating softened purified water in two boilers). Finally, the separator allows the oil to float above the surface of the water for collection into protective amber glasses.
Second, technically, expressed oils (extracted from rinds of fruits especially the grapefruit, tangerine, orange, and lemon) are not essential oils even though they are rich in terpene alcohol. Still, these oils are highly regarded for their therapeutic properties.
Third, technically, solvent-extracted absolutes are not essential oils due to being very volatile and water soluble. For that reason, they do not withstand the traditional distillation process. To produce absolutes, plants go through two distillation process, and because of that, virtually none of the original solvent remains. The final product is essences used for botanicals.
Essential Oils were used before the time of Christ. Egyptians were first to discover the therapeutic potential of Essential Oils. Rene-Maurice Gattefosse, PH.D, a French cosmetic chemist, was first in 1907 to research the healing properties of Essential Oils. Dr. Valnet used therapeutic-grade Essential Oils on patients suffering battlefield injuries of WWII. Today, massage therapist offer aromatherapy using Essential Oils:
